French is a Romance language, which means that it is derived from Latin. It is the second most widely taught foreign language (second only to English!) and the 3rd most common language on the Internet, after English and German. French is used in many international organizations such as the United Nations, International Olympic Committee, NATO, and the Red Cross and is also one of the two official languages of the European Union. France, the largest country in Western Europe, is the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Many English words are borrowed from French.
