Think Before You Speak
The Westford Public Schools work tirelessly to create a safe learning environment for all students. Aspart of that mission, a lesson called "Think Before You Speak" is taught in 6th grade health classes during the Social Health Unit. This lesson, along with others in this unit, is designed to teach students to treat each other with kindness and respect.
The Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Frameworks, data collected on student harassment, as wellas the need to foster a safe environment for all students are driving forces in Westford’s healthcurriculum and this lesson.
During this lesson part of a short film entitled "What Do You Know?" will be shown. In this film, studentsaged 6-12 share their opinions on why using the word “gay”, as an insult, is wrong.
The definition of the word gay will also be explained in very simple terms: “When somebody romantically like/loves someone of the same gender”. Additionally classes will explore what words or phrases could be used instead of “that’s so gay.”
If you prefer your child not be present during this lesson, please send an email or note to your child’s Health Teacher. Students opting out will receive an alternative lesson away from their class that day.
If you would like additional information about this lesson, please email your child’s health teacher.
Thank you for supporting learning experiences designed to promote equality and reduce all forms ofdisrespect.
