As your child prepares to become an independent learner, it is important he/she learn effective ways to organize their time, to study, and to prepare for tests. Please feel free to use the information gathered here to help your child.

Make Homework A High Priority
* Establish a study routine.
- same time/place
- study hour - best time is early afternoon
* Establish a place to study.
- bedroom "ok" if there are NO DISTRACTIONS
- do not study on your bed !
- uninterrupted quiet
* Completing homework is a higher priority.
- NO TV/Video Games/Ipod/Iming
- reduce outside activities if there is insufficient
time or energy for homework
Use Homework To Teach Organizational Skills
* Use an agenda book
- HMWK Times
* 6th = 45 - 60 minutes
* 7th = 1 - 1 1/2 hrs
* 8th = 1 1/2 - 2 hrs
* Plan ahead
- start working on major assignments or reviewing for
tests well ahead
* Increase concentration time
- use an egg timer
* Review Class Notes
- highlight the most important information
Setting Expectations
* Goals/Grades
- agree on reasonable/attainable
* Bring ALL material home
* HMWK becomes a chronic problem reduce freedoms
- giving your child less control about where/when HMWK is completed
- checking HMWK every evening
- parents/teachers maintaining on going communication in agenda book
