6 Blue Team News
LANGUAGE ARTS
Welcome to 6 Blue! It has been wonderful getting to know all of our students, and I look forward to working with students as well as their families throughout the year. Our goal this year is to examine the elements of "great" writing, and by June, ALL of our students will be better writers. This will be accomplished through the ongoing study of grammar, vocabulary and writing.

SOCIAL STUDIES
6 Blue student geographers are wrapping up their introduction to the theme of "Location" by trying their hand at cartography. They are creating their very own map of the world, showing off the key latitude and longitude lines. They have completed quizzes, mini "check-ins," homework assignments, scavenger hunts, role-playing activities, and more to be able to answer the question, "How do we use "location" to learn about the world?" We will next move on to a brief exploration into geographic terms, where students will find various types of physical features around the world, such as the Panama Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar.
Ask your child to define "isthmus" and to give an example of where one can be found in the world.
SCIENCE
The New Year is here and we are keeping busy exploring Earth's changing surface. We have just wrapped up our Ski Resort projects. They are on display in our library and we hope to have some of them displayed on the Blanchard web site very soon. The students worked very hard on these and they enjoyed using their imagination to come up with an ideal resort. We will be turning our attention to weathering and erosion. We will be looking at trying to simulate weathering by using a common product found in many households. Parents may remember the product tag line, "plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is!" We will move into soil formation and discover all the interesting creatures that live in the soil. The last portion of this unit will be dedicated to Earth's history where we wíll discuss fossils and geologic time.
