A Letter to Parents/Guardians of Seven White Students
Sent home: Friday, February 12, 2010
Dear Parents and Guardians,
When we return from February break we will be in the home stretch of another successful school year. By this point, supplies have dwindled and students are arriving to class unprepared more and more often. February break is a good time to replenish supplies and offer students a gentle reminder of the importance of coming prepared. Below, please find a list of the materials that students were asked to bring in at the beginning of the school year. Please check in with your child to see if he/she is currently in need of any of these items.
Thank you,
The Teachers of Seven White

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Now that we have successfully finished our study of the Phoenician and Hebrew civilizations and completed the second CBA, the historians of Seven White will now move onto to the study of the final civilizations of ancient world history. Over the next month or so, we will cover the important aspects of the ancient Greek civilization!!!
First, we will develop our understanding of this civilization by learning about the timeline of ancient Greece, studying their ancestors, and analyzing the impact of geography on Greek life. The students will then switch their focus to the development of the City-States of Greece. During this time, the students will define the characteristics of the Greek City-State, compare/contrast Athens and Sparta, and examine the origins/impact of Greek conflicts with the Persians and each other. Most importantly, we will examine how ancient Greece has influenced our society today, especially Greek mythology, the Olympics, theater, architecture, and the ideas/innovations of their great thinkers. Finally, we will cover the empire of Alexander the Great and spread of Greek culture throughout the ancient world.
SCIENCE:
The students have been working hard on a volcano project. The project involves the construction of a volcano model and a PowerPoint presentation. Students worked in groups of four. Each group randomly chose a volcano that can be found on Earth today. Presentations will start in the third week of January. Students will then take the CBA for the Inside Earth unit.
Our next unit revolves around the exploration and study of plant and animal cells. We will cover the following topics:
-Plant and Animal Cell Organelles
-Cell Processes
-Learning how to use a microscope (CLM and a digital scope)
