SOCIAL STUDIES

FEBRUARY -- The theme of the second term is "Expanding America."  We have studied the many challenges faced by the Washington and Adams administrations and the changes brought on by Jefferson.  We examined the Louisiana Purchase and the expedition of Lewis & Clark.  Next we will study Andrew Jackson and the removal of the Cherokee Nation (the Trail of Tears).  We will also study Westward Expansion, including the Mexican-American War, the annexation of Texas and California, the Oregon and Mormon Trails, and other topics related to the concept of Manifest Destiny.  In addition to these content objectives, we will continue to focus on improving communication, organization, time management and notetaking skills.

MATHEMATICS

CMP - In November, we are beginning our study of linear relationships. Using a simulation of a leaky faucet, discovering our walking rates and other activities, we are connecting the concept of linear relationships to real world situations. Students will learn to recognize these relationships in graphs, tables and equations and will understand how to use the constant change of linear relationships to make predictions.

Algebra - Students will continue to expand their equation solving skills to include variables on both sides and absolute value equations. We will also be solving simple and compound inequalities. Students will apply these skills to solve real life problems.

SCIENCE

During the month of October, the students will be investigating the properties of matter.  We will first look at mass, length, volume, and density.  These concepts will be reinforced with labs and activities.  We will then move onto the phases of matter and the phase changes as well.  The students will be graphing using the excel program and learning how to use the appropriate graph for their experiments.  The students will be learning the process of writing up a formal lab report.  They will continue to practice this skill through out the year.
